TOPICAL REVIEW Nuclear shadowing

چکیده

The phenomenon of shadowing of nuclear structure functions at small values of Bjorken-x is analyzed. First, multiple scattering is discussed as the underlying physical mechanism. In this context three different but related approaches are presented: Glauber-like rescatterings, Gribov inelastic shadowing and ideas based on high-density Quantum Chromodynamics. Next, different parametrizations of nuclear partonic distributions based on fit analysis to existing data combined with DokshitzerGribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi evolution, are reviewed. Finally, a comparison of the different approaches is shown, and a few phenomenological consequences of nuclear shadowing in high-energy nuclear collisions are presented.

Consequences of nuclear shadowing for heavy quarkonium production in hadron-nucleus interactions.

We study nuclear shadowing in J/ψ and Υ production in hadron-nucleus interactions and in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider. As a consequence of the perturbative Q2-dependence of gluon shadowing, we predict that Υ production is less suppressed than the J/ψ. We show that antishadowing leads to enhanced J/ψ production at xf ∼ 0, an effe...

Nuclear Shadowing at Low Q

In the light of a recent claim that models of nuclear shadowing which incorporate a vector meson dominance component at low Q2 are incompatible with nuclear deep inelastic scattering data, we compare the predictions of such a model with high precision data on the Q2 dependence of nuclear shadowing. Contrary to this claim, we find that models which incorporate both vector meson and partonic mech...

Generalized parton distributions of nuclei

We review recent theoretical results on generalized parton distributions (GPDs) of nuclei, emphasizing the following three roles of nuclear GPDs: (i) complementarity to free proton GPDs, (ii) the enhancement of traditional nuclear effects such as nuclear binding, EMC effect, nuclear shadowing, and (iii) an access to novel nuclear effects such as medium modifications of bound nucleons.

Applications of KP Nuclear Parton Distributions

We review the nuclear parton distribution functions computed on the basis of our microscopic model taking into account a number of nuclear effects including Fermi motion and nuclear binding, nuclear meson-exchange currents, off-shell corrections to bound nucleon distributions and nuclear shadowing. We discuss applications to a number of different processes including leptonnucleus deep inelastic...

Spatial Variation of Nuclear Structure Functions and Heavy Quark Production

We explore how nuclear modifications to the free nucleon structure functions (also known as shadowing) affect heavy quark production in collisions at different impact parameters. We assume that the nuclear modifications arise from a density dependent effect such as gluon recombination and are thus proportional to the local density. We calculate the dependence of charm and bottom quark productio...
